Whether you're maintaining a daily driver or prepping a weekend car for a show, understanding what goes into a proper detail helps you make smarter decisions about your vehicle's care. This guide covers every step of a professional detail from start to finish.
A car wash removes surface dirt. Detailing restores and protects every surface of your vehicle — paint, glass, wheels, interior fabrics, leather, trim, and engine bay. A full detail can take 4-8 hours depending on the vehicle's condition. A car wash takes 15 minutes. They're completely different services.
A professional exterior detail follows this sequence: pre-rinse to remove loose debris, foam cannon application to lift dirt safely, hand wash with microfiber mitts (never brushes), wheel and tire cleaning with dedicated products, clay bar decontamination to remove bonded surface contaminants, paint correction (polishing) to remove swirl marks and scratches, and finally protection — whether that's wax, sealant, or ceramic coating.
Full vacuum of all surfaces including under seats and in crevices. Steam cleaning of hard surfaces — vents, buttons, door panels, center console. Hot water extraction (shampooing) of carpets and fabric seats. Leather cleaning and conditioning for leather surfaces. Glass cleaning inside and out. Trim dressing with UV protectant. Odor treatment if needed.
Paint correction is the process of removing imperfections in the clear coat — swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots. It's done with a machine polisher and progressively finer compounds and pads. A single-stage correction removes about 50-70% of defects. A multi-stage correction can achieve 90-95% removal. This step is essential before applying ceramic coating.
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your car's clear coat, creating a semi-permanent layer of protection. Professional-grade coatings (9H hardness) resist UV damage, chemical etching, bird droppings, road salt, and light scratches. Properly applied coatings last 2-5 years depending on the product and maintenance. Learn more on our ceramic coating service page.
Not every car needs every service. Daily commuter cars benefit most from regular maintenance washes and interior cleans. Cars you care about preserving should get paint correction and ceramic coating. High-value or exotic vehicles should consider PPF (paint protection film) on high-impact areas.
