Tesla paint is notoriously thin and soft. Factory clear coat on Model 3 and Model Y typically measures 90–110 microns total — about 20–30% thinner than a comparable German sedan. Soft clear corrects easily but also scratches easily, and aggressive polishing can cut through in one pass. Tesla owners who use generic detailers often end up with holograms, burned edges around body seams, and uneven correction.
Beyond paint, Teslas have unique surfaces — the glass roof has a specific UV film layer that standard glass cleaners can damage, the frunk has a pollen filter that generic detailers ignore, the matrix-LED headlights need careful masking because the lens-to-housing seal is more delicate than ICE vehicles. Tesla detailing isn't just "regular detailing on an electric car."
Teslas in NYC deal with every environmental factor a regular car faces, plus a few specific to the platform. Supercharger parking bays are often near construction-adjacent parking lots, meaning more dust exposure. The all-glass roof bakes harder in summer because there's no metal panel to dissipate heat — interior temperatures can hit 140°F on an unshaded parked Tesla, which accelerates leather and trim degradation.

We measure paint thickness at minimum six points per panel before any polish work on a Tesla — essential because there's less margin than on most vehicles. Wash is always two-bucket with ultra-soft mitts; Tesla paint shows marring from even moderately stiff microfiber. Decontamination skips aggressive iron removers in favor of gentler chemistry because of the soft clear coat.
Correction uses the lightest pad-and-polish combo that can still cut, usually a finishing polish on a soft foam pad rather than a one-step combo on a microfiber cutting pad. We never go above 1500 rpm on Tesla paint. The glass roof gets a dedicated glass-safe ceramic coating instead of a standard one. Interior vegan leather (Tesla's synthetic upholstery) gets a conditioner matched to synthetic materials — traditional leather conditioners damage it over time.
We don't open the frunk with the vehicle locked, and we ask for a PIN or key card rather than asking you to stay present for access. Teslas use 12V systems internally despite the main drive battery — we don't disconnect anything electrical without cause. Charge-port covers and door handles have their own cleaning approach because the recessed designs trap dirt in ways regular panels don't.
For ceramic coating we use products rated for EV high-temp scenarios — brake regen heats wheels differently than friction braking, so wheel coatings need to tolerate different thermal cycles. Our preferred coatings for Teslas are Gtechniq CRYSTAL SERUM ULTRA, CarPro CQuartz Professional, and Gyeon Mohs EVO — all tested in EV environments and compatible with Tesla's soft paint.

We've detailed over 100 Teslas — Model S, 3, X, Y, Cybertruck, and Roadster. Each variant has its quirks. Model S has aluminum body panels that react to chemicals differently than steel. Cybertruck's stainless steel exterior is a completely different surface that needs dedicated products (it scratches, it fingerprints, and regular wax doesn't apply).
